Each moment is an opportunity for enactment. As we inhale and exhale each breath of air, our minds are busily processing information from the environment and making decisions about how best to respond to the current situation. Oftentimes our choices are (re)actions that mirror how we have responded in the past, without much thought to whether or not this (re)action is the most effective choice in the current situation. We may then be (re)enacting the previous situation rather than being present in the current one, expecting a similar outcome as we have experienced in the past. While this may be effective some of the time, inevitably we will miss the true opportunities for growth and connection that are available in each unique moment.

Reenactments occur frequently in our everyday lives. While mostly unconscious, these unintended reactions tend to cause the most harm in our interpersonal relationships and life choices. What we want to learn to do is to ACT, not react. Acting entails making a conscious choice and acting in the here-and-now, based on the current situational demands and what may be the most effective response at this time. Some of the decision-making will still be done seemingly unconsciously, with the assistance of your intuition, but true intuitive insight takes into account the reality of the current conditions and your ability to act upon them. Learning to decipher between normal reactions based on past learning and the wisdom of insight in the moment is the key to successful enactment in life. Experiment with true enactment in your life and be mindful of the results!

Mindfulness is a practice of being in the moment, taking in what is happening in the here-and-now, and letting go of all other distractions. Mental buzz, emotional turmoil, work stress, and relationship challenges can all be put on hold while you take in a deep breath, focus on the slow releasing of air from your lungs and body, and just be present! Non-judging awareness of what is happening in the moment, whether it be the wind blowing in the leaves, the sound of the horn honking a couple streets away, the sun shining through the clouds and on your cheek–this lets you know that you are here, now! This awareness can give you a pause, a break from the normal habits of the mind or the sudden emotional rush of a memory or event. Taking breaks, even short breaks throughout the day, gives space for new ideas and experiences to enter into the habitual ways of thinking, being, and responding. Give yourself a break!
